I keep getting the following message on my DNN site:

Could not allocate space for object 'EventLog' in database '***' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full.

When the error happens, I have to contact my host (ihostasp.net) and have them truncate the log and shrink the DB.  I can't find much documentation about the problem, and I have turned down the site's event logging to practically nothing (e.g., limit at 10 latest entries).  Still, the error arises every week or so.

The site is a news site with about 1,000 users.  The site uses Scott McCollough's News Articles module (www.ventrian.com) for most content updates.

Any help will be appreciated.

the problem is probably that your Hosting provider set the database recovery type to Full, which causes all changes in the db to be logged to a transaction log. This transaction log will only be emptied if the database and database log is properly backed up on a regular basis

You should ask them to either modiy their backup strategy to make sure that transaction logs are purged after backup, or to set the recovery type of the database to "Simple"

Thanks for the reply.

My host verified that my database is set to Simple recovery mode.

Any other ideas?

right

well, just to know what we are talking about here. What size database did you "buy". The error you get just means that the database cannot grow beyond the size that is set by the hosting provider.

Also.. if this is a busy site, you might check the table SiteLog. If you have site log enabled, this table can get rather large. ..

If I am correct - this is something to do with the master database on the server - not to do with the actual site itself. I have seen this before on my local machine and I had to backup the master database which shrunk some logs and then everything worked as normal again.

I think it depends on how the sql backups on the servers are done - if you backup the master, it automatically gets resized, but if you don't, then it has to be done manually.

Just my thoughts as I have experienced it and found for me, that was the problem
