We have been expirementing with DNN 4.7 for a few days, and I downloaded some skins and modules to play with.  We have a few pages built, and have been trying things out to see what they do.  We were playing with skins, and loaded one of the XD skins that didn't have the left and right pane on pages that had stuff in the left and right panes.  I don't know if this is important or not.  Either way, the site now comes back as a server error, and I connot figure out how to get into it to fix the skin and get things working again.  Is there a way to go through the explorer and fix this?  We tried to restore the computer to an earlier restore point, but it didn't do it.  Where is all the configuration stuff stored?  Our site is under the inetpubs/DNN47 directory.  There has to be a way to restore this!  If not, I need to figure out what files I should back up before major changes so I don't run into this problem again.  Which files actually define the site? (We are using the SQL 2005 Express database and know absolutely nothing abou thow to use it).  Thanks for any suggestions.  Overall, I do not care much about recovering what we have right now as it is just playing around stuff, but I will care about how we back this up when we do build a real site. (It would be nice to recover what we have though, it would save some time...)

Hi - You CANNOT kill your dnn website with a skin. You can destroy how the page looks, and not log in.

http://blogs.ninameiers.com/2007/01/30/Broken+DNN+Site+Using+Vertical+Menu.aspx

I posted this blog when there was problems with the vertical tree menu - it screwed up sites big time.

But it's an easy fix - rename another skin file to the one you had applied and ftp to server.

And in the future - NEVER put a skin on whole site without testing on a single page first.

Hope this gets you out of your problem.

Nina,

Thank you for the free skins to play with, it has helped us to understand how some of this works.  I tried renaming the skins like you suggested, but I think I am up against a bigger fish.  (I may have renamed the wrong stuff anyway) The last two skins I tried came back with errors, and I thought I had removed them.  I think I tried to put one of the error skins on.  This is a good lesson, I am sure of it, I just need to figure out what it is I am learning.  I think I am going to start over at this point, I am not really loosing anything.  The biggest lesson for me in this problem is that I do not have any idea where all the information for the site is stored (this is on a local machine).  We are trying to decide if DNN 4.7 is a good choice for our Camaro Clubs next website (the old one is in FrontPage).  So far, we like some of the features, but are getting really frustrated with all the error messages we keep hitting, as well as an obvious lack of a central point for all of our files.  We have a lot to learn yet before we make our decision, but would like to have something to show at our next officers meeting.  When it is time to build the real site, we have already determined that a custom skin/container package is going to be a high priority, we haven't seen anything out there that reflects the feel and look that we want.

Mitch,

I am trying to run the script you show in the blog, but keep getting an error:  MSG 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1  INVALID OBJECT NAME 'Skins'.

The text I used is identical to what you wrote:

UPDATE skins
SET skinsrc '[G]Skins/dnn-blue/horizontal menu - fixed width.ascx'
WHERE PortalID 0

AND SkinRoot 'Skins'

except my AND statement is grey, and my portal ID value is black instead of red.  Everything in the quote marks is red (SQLExpress).  I opened SQL Express, expand Databases, click on DNN47, and then clicked the New Query button.  I entered the text, and then clicked the execute button.  What am I doing wrong????
