Hi all,

I am just trying to get my bearings a bit with DotNetNuke. Please bare with me.

Are DotNetNuke and Microsoft Expression (Web/Blend) complimentary or competing offerings? I know DotNetNuke is a Content Management System at its core. But can I do DotNetNuke based web design, for example, using Microsoft Expression?

In other words, can I use Microsoft Expression with DotNetNuke?

Hopefully, my question makes sense.

Thanks.

DotNetNuke is really a web site platform or framework.  The visual aspect of it is almost completely abstracted using what is called a skinning engine.  This "skin" capability allows you and anyone else to be able to make the web site look how you want it to, while taking advantage of all of its pre-programmed functionality.  For instance, you don't need to learn or know how to create a user/membership system.  It is already there for you.  You just need to make it look "pretty."

Software suites such as what you suggested in Expression are really design tools that allow you to create the visual aspects for a framework - like DotNetNuke.  You can really use pretty much anything to create a DotNetNuke layout (skin).  What you use is really a personal preference.  Each tool has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some people literally use Notepad - though that is normally because they find it fun to do so.   :)

higmightiness is correct, and I would like to add to that as well.. in reference to skinning...

You can skin using Expression Web, but only using html method and you can't really see the menu structure which alot of designers spend their time on.

If you attempt to skin using Expression Web, with the ascx controls you end up with lots of grey boxes as it can't find all the controls -there is no 'hook' into the system unlike the Sharepoint Designer which is a dll that hooks the sharepoint app and the controls used.

So if that's where you coming from in reference to hooking into actual functionality of adding content and moving things around, as explained in the previous post, it's done online, but if you want to modify the look and feel of the application, in html format Expression web can work for you.

I manage all my sites, DNN, PHP and otherwise using Expression and formerly Frontpage. You don't use Expression to carry out any content management operations on the DNN portal. It is just for file management, styles and code, and it makes life a heck of a lot easier than ftp and external apps. There are some caveats regarding permissions and the Microsoft stub files that you have to be aware of if you are going to use it and I should really write it all up somewhere.

Thank you everyone for your reply. So it sounds like I can use Expression for my front-end design if I want to.

Rob, I would love if you write something up (assuming you have the time). Also, maybe I can convince the MS Expression folks somehow to create a blog post about using Expression with DNN

I have not downloaded DNN yet, but I am assuming it comes with some default/example skins???
