validation is always a specific problem - you can create a list in lists table with all payd ID's but how do you verify the user is using his own? you might need to create your own data type and edit control

In order to validate the "constituent ID", in this case, I need to intercept the "validate new registrant information" event, and do my custom validation.

How would you recommend I go about doing that?  If it is to create a custom control, as you mentioned above, how do I get that custom control to show up on the registration page (as opposed to a regular textbox, etc.)?

The extend use the ManageProfileProperties option in UserAccounts.

I created a new profile property called "constituent ID", but it doesn't show up as a field on the user registration page.  It is marked as a required field on the profile page.  Here's the profile properties page:

Here's the registration page:

How do I get it ConstituentID to show up on the user registration page, and be required?  I will also need to do some custom validation on that field, both that the provider level (when creating the user in the system), and probably also at the form level, so they can't submit the form unless it's a valid constituent ID.

I eventually stumbled upon the answer to my question elsewhere.

In order for custom profile fields to be visible on the registration page, you have to go to Users Accounts, User Settings, and then check "Require a valid Profile for Registration" (towards the bottom of the settings list)

It would seem that this should be checked by default, rather than unchecked.  Regardless, it needs to be checked, or users will not have the opportunity to set their profile information during registration.

By default it is unchecked because the default registration is fairly simple: username, first/last and password which maybe good enough for most sites.  The profile is minimal. When you check that box, your adding a lot more options to the  registration  process.

I don't quite follow.

If I mark a profile field as required, and uncheck "require valid profile for registration", then the user:

1) Registers on the site
2) Comes to login, and is forced to fill out their profile before continuing

If I mark a profile field as required, and check "require valid profile for registration", then the user simply registers and fills out their profile all in one fell swoop.

The only difference is whether or not the user has to complete their registration in one step, or two steps.  I prefer one step :-)

Regardless, it would probably be helpful if somewhere on the profile manager we had a bit of clarifying text that explained that you have to check "require valid profile for registration" in order to get profile fields (required or not) to show up on the registration page.

Perhaps the best solution would be to only have required profile fields (not all profile fields) show up on the registration page?  For instance, in my case, the only additional profile field I need is "ConstituentID".  But it's showing them a place to fill in every profile field.
