No, you can set each instance to view as month calendar, week calendar or list. What I was trying to say was that you only need two instances if you want to show the same events twice, on different pages and/or different views, with one instance using the other one as subcalendar. Simply try it, and you will see what I mean.

I don't see a way to add categories
Use the "Edit Categories" item in the module action menu.

display past events in my list instead of them falling off as time goes on
There is an option in the Event Module Settings / Event List Settings section, where you can limit the displayed events in the list from x days before current date to y days after current date. It's perhaps not exacty what you want, as the events are limited by date, and not by the number of events, but I think it's quite close.
