I'm trying to setup a forum on a public facing site, and I'm trying to understand the role and forum behavior configuration.  I'm looking for a pretty basic setup such that the forums well be visible to any unauthenticated user that may visit.  I want only registered users to be able to start/reply to threads, and I do NOT want to have to moderate and approve each post for 99% of people, and I don't want the message "Since you have posted to a moderated forum you must wait for approval" to appear.  I can foresee, however, that there might be a select few abusive users that will need to be moderated for various reasons, but that I don't want to fully block from posting and/or remove their account all together.

My question is, should I create an auto role called something like "Forum users" that all reg'd users will be assigned to and uncheck the "Requires Moderation" box within forum config?  Then, if a user must be moderated in the forums I can pull their ID from the forum users role and assign to another role (i.e. Moderated Forum Users) which will have the "requires moderation" box checked?

Am I making this WAY more complicated than it needs to be?  Any guidance is very much appreciated.
Thanks
Andy

I think I have discovered that part of the answer to my problem is as simply as removing the "trusted user" setting from any forum poster that must be moderated.  The problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to change that setting.  Under the Forum User Settings > Admin Settings > "Trusted User" check box is grayed out since I have the Forum Configuration > User Settings > Trust New Users check box is checked.

In a public moderated forum where new users are automatically trusted and unmoderated, how do I select a single user and remove his "trust" to enable moderation on that single persons posts?

Thanks again.

I think I have the same problem - I want to ban a single user and don't want to have to edit the perms for every single forum. The Trust User checkbox for this person is greyed out.

but interestingly, my "Trust New Users" is NOT checked, and nor is the "Lock NEw User" setting, but the individual trust box is still disabled..
