Looking for hosts - thanks to ChrisH & MitchelS, I think I'm down to PowerDNN and 3E.

One significant difference is the single DNN install allowed at PDNN vs. multiple DNN installs you can have at 3E.  What is the rule of thumb on that?  Better to have the one install and multiple portals for ease of use?  Anyone have problems with a single install going down and taking out their entire client base?

To start off with, I don't think I'll be going crazy with a bunch of custom modules or anything like that.  I can get away with staying pretty vanilla for a while, maybe using a 3rd party module down the road.

there have been several discussions about this subject already, in summary:

  • single install with multiple portals needs less memory, as code is loaded only once
  • single install with multiple portals is easier to maintain
  • you cannot backup/restore a single portal of an installation
  • issues in a shared installation might affect all portals

I'd like to add one more to the list.

In a shared installation a user account can only exist with 1 username and 1 password.  Therefore the only way to share usernames across portals is if they are actually the same person.

Let me rephrase.  I'm aware of the "textbook" implications. I guess I'm after more "real-world" experiences - you have any?  Yes, multiple portals looks good on paper, but does anyone have any horror stories doing it that way and wish they had gone the other way?  Or have some "gotchas" to contribute.

And I wasn't part of those discussions - I perform forum searches prior to posting, in this case/topic with no success.  Any resources you can point me to?

Separate installs can be configured for separate application pools, meaning more stability and greater performance.  But you may not notice this advantage, depending on your sites.  Separate installs can also use separate application security settings.

Real world for most installations is that a single install with portals is easiest to manage and has no problems.
