Hi all,

I'm REALLY new to DNN and I installed 4.5 a while back... I'm trying now to upgrade to 4.8 (my first upgrade) and I'm having some trouble.  I thought I followed the readme files correctly... backup files and database, copy expanded contents of upgrade ZIP file over existing install, rename release.config to web.config, copy and paste in my connection string and the machine keys.  My "objectQualifier" is empty on both...   It sounded pretty simple but when I did it and tried to access the site I get:

Exception Details: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.

I too am having problems upgrading to 4.08 from 4.05.05.  I am geting upgrade errors in the status report for the 04.06.00.SqlDataProvider and 04.07.00.SqlDataProvider.  In addition, I am getting exception errors concerning nulls in the database when I attempt to load the default Webpage for the site.  This makes me think that going from 4.05 to 4.08 is too big of a jump and that something is not getting populated in the database.  My next step since I can not find any feedback is to do an incremental upgrade to 4.06, then 4.07 and finally 4.08.  I will update this thread with my results.

I just posted an answer to a similar question in another thread.

The gist of the answer is that you should try upgradeing to 4.7.0 and then to 4.8.0.  There seems to be a problem upgrading directoy from 4.5.x to 4.8.0.  Upgrading from 4.6.2 to 4.8.0 will work.

Please seem my reply in this thread:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/193052/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I had originally thought that my unzipping of the 4.08.00 version install files into a folder which had contained an earlier (4.5.x) version had caused the problem.  I've since seen so many forum threads relating to this problem which is essentially caused by conflicts with obsolete dll files in the /bin folder that I'm beginning to wonder if the 04.06.00.txt file which is supposed to direct the removal of unneeded files during the upgrade is failing to be processed.

NOTE: Do not delete any files from the /bin folder which are NOT listed in my post. Be especially careful not to delete files which are similar in name to those in the list. Depending on your installation, you may not find that you have all of the files in the list.

There MUST be a problem from 4.5.3 to 4.8... I decided to just wipe the site and start over.  I wiped the database and all the files.  I used the same website, database name, etc... everything the same; just new database and new files.  I installed 4.5.3 and it went great.  Site came up new and clean and everything worked.   I didnt install any custom modules, skins or anything.  Totally empty and baren.  I then proceeded to copy the upgrade files for 4.8.. migrated my web.config files and then revisted the site.  Everything in the upgrade process said it succeeded.   I then revisted the site...  I didnt get an error this time and the site came up fine but NEITHER of my passwords worked... host or admin.  I was totally locked out.

This is a joke...
