Hi Sebastian,

Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing... There are two issues regarding portal email addresses and smtp servers (and sorry for hijacking the thread like this):

One issue is that multi-portal DNN instances with multiple domains all have to use one email server to send emails. This causes emails to be tagged as spam because the sender address doesn't match the sending server in all but one of the portals. I'm not aware of any way to get around this right now, although there are one or two modules (e.g. Datasprings' Opt-in Email") that make the effort and provide per-module smtp settings as a workaround.

The other issue is that the sender address for portal emails currently has to belong to an account that is the assigned portal administrator, and that is inappropriate in a business environment.  All portals I run have business owners, and those businesses usually have a person assigned to deal with emails delivered by the portal and various modules, but that person is not supposed to be a DNN administrator because that is not their job; they are not the webmaster. More often than not, the person who deals with the emails is what we call a personal assistant or business admin and giving that person full control over the portal is out of the question.

I wrote up a gemini issue about it a while ago (and another one 2-3 years back) but Alex closed it stating that is was all either on the cards or should be discussed in the forums.

Do you think either of these things likely to be fixed up somewhere along the roadmap? All it really needs is per-portal smtp (as the originator of this thread requested) plus the ability to specify any user as the sender - not just the portal admin.

Rob

Rob, if i understand you correctly you are actually saying 2 things, which are related by nature (email), but otherwise not.

  1. it is important to have smtp settings per portal (or really domain), since most receiving mail server regard mail sent by a  mailserver that does not belong to the sending domain as spam (btw, i think it should be possible to circumvent this with an spf record in the dns records of the sending domain). We are on the same page for this. This will be possible in one of the future cambrian versions. My main reason to want this is that in a hosted portal environment, i want to be able to keep track of bandwidth usage of the separate portals. This includes bandwidth usage of email. If all portals use the same smtp settings, there is no way to differentiate emai usage between portals (well, not easily anyway....short of examaning full email logs)
  2. It would be usefull to be able to differentiate between the business owner of the portal and the administrator. Right now we have a setting in site settings defining the portal administrator, and as far as i know the only place where this setting is really used is where it comes to determining the "from" address in several email situations. Your point is that the portal admin might not at all be related to the actual business that is the "owner" of the portal, and hence, the email address of system emails is wrong. In light of the decoupling of admin modules, it would be beneficial to also take into account the "Portal From email address / name"

did i summarize your points correctly?

Hi Erik, yep.. spot on.

The first point is accepted by one and all, but I have been having trouble getting the second point across. The way you've understood it is correct and this enhancement is a natural fit with the admin module changes due in Cambrian.

If I put in another Gemini ticket for this, it will need someone to verify it so that it gets past Alex... or can you put it in as a core member maybe - assuming of course that you agree it is a good idea?

Erik,

the address is used as FROM for system notifications and as TO for signup notifications - and needs to be a member of the administrators role.

Rob,

I would hold of with that for now. I will make sure this will make its way to Charles (who is doing the bulk of the decoupling). Sebastian and I will be working on a new email system, which also will give a lot more flexibility with portal emails...
