Hi guys,

I am slightly new to all of this and although I managed to find my way around pretty much all of the modules, the one problem I have is that on a high resolution (1400x1050) the site looks brilliant.

However, when I put the resolution down to 1024x768, my site looks enormous. I am using one of the purchased skins and I chose the fixed width. Is there any way how I can reduce this so that it fits nicely into the screen?

Thanks,

Vtec

Do you have a link so we can have a look?

One of the common mistakes I have come across is placing too many items going across in the horizontal menu.

If you place more items than the fixed width of the skin, the skin will automatically widen to accommodate the menu.

- So as a test I would remove some of the menu items, perhaps place them in sub menus etc. and see if that reduces the width and improves the layout. - Once the menu has been fixed, the modules should automatically size to the fixed width specified.

Further recommendations would be to build your website using the resolution of 1024x768 - a lot of people use 1024x768 and 800x600 is also still common, so I would recommend that you build the site while viewing in 1024x768 and also try to ensure that the pages are still readable at 800x600.

To give you an idea, these are the resolutions of the people visiting DNN Creative.

1024x768    36.86%
1280x1024    27.75%
1600x1200   5.44%
1280x800    5.34%
1400x1050    5.25%
1152x864    4.86%
1680x1050    3.34%
1920x1200    2.24%
800x600    1.96%
1440x900    1.76%

Bear in mind that the people visiting this site are more likely to have up to date IT equipment, whereas on a site aimed at the general public, you will probably find the lower resolutions are much more popular.

A useful tool for switching between resolution views is a web developer tool for the firefox browser

Which is available here: http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/webdeveloper/

With this tool you can select which size you want to view the page at and it will re-size your window for you. It also has a lot of other useful tools for testing your web pages.

Other than the points covered by the detailed post by Lee, I would also consider the printability of the page. Unless you have printable version of the page, I would strongly recommend to stick to 770px width so the layout of the page is printable on average A4 page. 100% width will also work as it will flow to accommodate the A4 page.

If you design a page to look right at that high resolution it's going to look different at lower resolutions.  I prefer to design a page to look right at the lower resolution.  Then I can either have the design be a fixed width (my preference) so that if someone running a higher resolution visits they just get extra white space on the sides, or have the page grow to take up whatever width is available.  The later can be a challenge to do without having the page fall apart.

thanks for the information - but what I didn`t yet understand is where within the framework can i specify that the page will be 770px fixed? or where within a module can i specify this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
