We would like to run DNN for a corporate web site.  IN this case there would be no domain name.  For example we have a server (AGUILA) that is AS2003, SQL Server 200 enterprise and DNN 4.8.   Our users would like to use this server by typing http://aguila.

We installed DNN 4.8 on AGULIA and it works when connected directly to the server.  But when we test on another PC on the same network we get an error

http://localhost/dotnetnuke  this page cannot be found.

We have looked at the Portal alias and it is set to (localhost/dotnetnuke) we have try to add other alias's (aguila) and get the same error.

Is it possible to run DNN on the corporate intranet for company users?

It is absolutely possible.  In fact, that is one of the areas where I feel that DNN is best suited.  However, the portal aliases are cached.  If you have not already, you will want to clear the cache for the site if you changed the portal alias in the database manually.

Also, be sure that your network admin has your internal DNS servers properly configured to forward requests to the AGULIA server.  (This is likely your issue.)

Finally, you may need to also put a reference in IIS for that site to accept requests for that header value.  But I typically do not need to worry about that.

Your clients are send to localhost which indicates that only localhost is added as alias under "host" -> "portals" . Just add another alias aquila and your most likely set.

You need to edit your portal alias to reflect the server name instead of localhost.
