Hi all,

I work for a software house that supplies a web product to UK Councils. We are currently preparing to rewrite the application where one of our main goals is to produce a truly accessible/compliant interface (XHTML, W3C, DDA etc..). The reason for this is accessibility and XHTML compliance is a must for our customers. We are aiming to achieve the following targets:

  •  XHTML 1.0 Transitional
  • Admin Interface - Single A Compliant
  • Public Interface - Double A Compliant

We are looking at basing the next generation system on top of an existing CMS application such as DNN. I have spent a lot of time going through DNN forums that discuss the accessibility/XHTML issues however most of the threads are from 2006, and therefore very dated.

So I decided to start this thread to try to get a better understanding of where DNN is at regarding accessibility and compliance.

Does anybody know if:

  • DNN (out-of-the-box) is XHTML compliant? If it is, then to what level?
  • DNN (out-of-the-box) is compliant with accessibility standards? If it is, then to what level?
  • There are any working projects for creating an accessible/complaint version of DNN?
  • The DNN team have any present/future plans relevant to this thread?

Any advice that you could provide would be really appreciated.

I did find the following statement on DNN’s online help in the “Benefits of DotNetNuke” section: “The DNN framework also complies with the ADA (American Disability Association) standards for accessible websites.”. Although this isn’t directly relevant to UK legislation; it’s promising all the same.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Interesting question. There's some information here but no (or any subsequent) statement on specific levels of compliance that I can find (UK/Euro or US).

Timo, head of our Skinning project, is focussing on XHTML compliance of core framework and new module releases.

I'm also interested in making DNN accessible. is it my understanding that the default navigation bar is implemented using javascript, if this is the case what are the implications if scripts are not supported by the browser or have been disabled. There is a requirement for accessible sites to work with scripts disabled. any responses and thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I actually think this is a VITAL area for DNN since in UK businesses have a legal obligation to ensure their sites are accessible. By using frameworks such as DNN one would hope that one gets this automatically without writing it seperately.... I am sure alot of the XHTML and Section 508 compliance is in DNN. However it would be very useful to have a formal statement about DNN's compliance.....

Sam
