Thanks for all your suggestions, but I will tell you what I think happened.  I must have set one of the modules to be the "default" for all new ones.  This was not really working in the 4.5 version that I used, because whenever I set that, it didn't really affect any new modules I added.

Once I upgraded to 4.8, whatever settings I chose as "default" setting, were spread across the site for all modules.  I had to change another module to the default settings (I actually had to do this twice) and then all the modules settings changed, and I could go into the individual ones that I wanted to be different and change them.

WHEW!  did that make any sense?  Probably not, because it didn't to me either.  I think it was just something flaky.  Might have missed a step on the upgrade?
