So we figured it out and I just wanted to post what we found. In the module you can get a reference to any of the modules parents (this.Parent). So it is possible to do something like:

this.Parent.Parent.Parent

until you get to the parent you are looking for. (Its probably a better idea to make a method where you loop through the parents till you find the one you are looking for, something like:

private Control getParentControlByName(string controlName)
        {
            Control parentControl = this.Parent;
            while (parentControl != null)
            {
                if (parentControl.ID == controlName)
                {
                    return parentControl;
                }
                parentControl = parentControl.Parent;
            }
            return parentControl;
        }

but you ge tthe idea) Just wanted to let people know, this is a pretty handy thing, I do wish it was a bit cleaner (this.Skin.Panes.ContentPane or something of the like) but at least you can do it.
