"You can always tell the pioneers by the arrows in their backs!" - anon

"I should have started an ARROW-HEAD collection!" - me

Hoping to take advantage of Server 2008 & II7's new capability to run under a system account that  you set up with limited permissions (instead of the "NETWORK SERVICE" account used in IIS 6), I keep running into missing permission problems! It seems if I keep the "run-time" account at low permissions, I get errors about missing permissions even in the Windows Dot Net Framework temporary ASP files directory! And even adding this account to the web.config file doesn't seem to help from getting the "Server Error" Can't read config file!" page.

Anyone know the steps required to set up the "run time account" properly for Server 2008, IIS 7 and DNN 4.8? (For obvious reasons we don't want to run with "Admin" privileges!)

We are experiencing a similar problem. We are currently in the process of moving from Win2k3 to Win2k8.

Currently with IIS 6 we have our DNN instance running under a custom application pool with a domain account, without any problems.

BTW - we do this so we can use integrated authentication to access the database.

On Win2k8, I've managed to get some other standalone ASP.NET, ColdFusion etc sites running with an app pool with a domain user, but don't seem to be able to with DNN. I keep getting the following exception:

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. (E:\WebRoot\comwebdev.com.auckland.ac.nz\web.config line 88)

It's from our development server and is just the standard install package for 4.9. I've set the app pool to allow 32bit apps & have set it to use the classic pipeline. Also the domain account has modify permissions from the root of the site. I've dealt with the hosting permission thing before, but that was only when trying to run a website from a network share & had to configure CAS to get around it.

I've searched and searched but don't seem to be able to find anything, any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers Wayne

I think I've found a bit of an issue with Server 2008 and DNN 4.9 & 5.0RC2.

Basically I've just tried getting a default install of 4.8.4, 4.9 & 5.0RC2 working with a domain user account as the application pool identity and all went without problem for the 4.8.4 version of DNN. But for both 4.9 & 5.0RC2 it blows up with the stuff above.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour on server 2008?

Oh well might be time to head to gemini and see if it's in there.

Forget about DNN.  Get a Hello World! ASPX file working with the new account first.  Try www.iis.net for support with IIS and running under a new account.  Take a look at the hosting provider guidelines as well.

Only just getting back to this now after a long hot xmas break.

Yes, I can get other .NET apps running without problem with a custom identity for the app pool and can even get 4.8.4 running without issue. Problem is though, if I try and upgrade to DNN5 or even just attempt to do a fresh install of 4.9.x it throws the AspNetHostingPermission error.

I saw mention on another post that it could be that the worker process user doesn't have permissions on some .NET temp folders. Anybody got any ideas which folders they might be?

Cheers Wayne
