The promise of DNN 5.0 sounds good and I am looking forward to it but......... we are talking about something that is at least a year away and probably more like 18 months for a stable version.

I am not a developer but I was thinking that all I really need is a module that will create a new tab and set the permissions for that tab. If I had that then I could use third party modules to do most everything else. How difficult would such a module be to develop?  I know there was once a module something like this called My Home page or something close. I think Rodney at Smart-Thinker had it.

Any ideas?

Smartthinker does have a module like that but the underlying principle behind that functionality (that is, create a tab and set permissions) would be cake.  I think it is when you take it a few steps farther in saying that user "x" can add module "y" but not module "z" to a page that starts getting complicated.  Currently, except for Dave Buckner's control panel (TRTControlPanel) and possibly some others out there, you can't lock down the permissions to add a module to particular roles.  That is a problem because what if you have a pretty powerful module that you don't want Joe Blow putting on his MyPage?  Gets a little tricky there.

So yeah, underlying principle == easy; real implementation depends on actual features.
