Of Sebastians (at this moment 11k) posts, I'd say a very small percentage of them are actually useful to anybody not versed in BS answers.  He is proud of how many posts he has, but look at them... a bunch of one-liners that either don't even remotely answer the question or only halfway attempt to point in the right direction.

I agree with you, whether there is a release date or not people are looking to get at least a ball-park, not one of these "it'll be done when it is done" answers.  That helps nobody and does nothing to promote and foster DNN.  It is a noncommittal and extremely defensive answer.  Look, we all work with software on a daily basis and are well aware of the risks and mishaps that can come up and change release dates, but lets try not to destroy the whole initiative and put people off of it by skirting the questions and providing useless information.

Based on the information that I have noticed in previous discussions on this topic, no-one from DNN Corp has provided any indications of when a beta would be tested OR when a public release would be made.

I know that at OpenForce it was discussed that the first release of Cambrian would be at the end of Q1 or sometime near....but none of us really knows for sure.

I think the only true indicator is when the DNN Mothership is dogfooding the release as that is typically the time just before it is released.

I don't think DNN 5 will come out any time soon. DNN 5 promises new features like versioning control, workflow and multilanguage content. These new features would require rewriting core modules from the ground up. However, in their present state they are being developed for a number of years and yet are still mighty buggy (take, for instance, gallery, blog or forum (the last one is buggy even on the mothership)). It is my fear that if DNN 5 will indeed come out in the near future it would still be using current versions of the core modules and thus not using any new features of the platform, or it would be buggy as hell for a long time. :)

  • first cambrian release has been announced at Openforce'07 for end of Q1.
  • version control, workflow and multilanguage content are some of the announced new features of DNN Cambrian, which is the code name for a series of releases throughout 2008, i.e. most of the new features will not be part of DNN 5.0, but be added in later releases
  • modules are developed by project teams. While a number of the teams are headed by Core Team members, the components are developed and released independently (except there is a need, e.g. due to a core release with breaking changes).

I think your all being a bit unduley harsh on the situation there are a number of blogs which state as sebastian has reiterated that cambrian will be pitched for about the end of Q1.
Differences from that will be for the users benefit as hopefully a large number of bugs would have been addressed in the release process.
And if you use a module ad find it buggy report the bug or better yet contribute a fix... thats the point of an open source community.
