Hi

I'm trying to understand how to develop a custom module. I have two questions.

From what I read so far, it seems that I have to build the module within the DNN project. Is it not possible to develop the module as a separate VS project and later add it to the dnn solution?

Also, is it possible to convert an existing project to a module?

Thanks

Naho

You don't have to build a module within the DNN project, in fact I prefer not to. If you use the WAP (Web Application Project) templates for Visual Studio you can build modules that are their own projects/solutions.

It is also possible to convert an existing project to a module as well, depending on how the project and code is configured it may or may not be easy.

Michael has some great tutorials for getting started over on http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/

Hi Chris

Thank you for your reply.

When you say that I can use the WAP template, do you mean create a module as in Michael's tutorial "Using Web Application Projects (WAP)"? If I understood correctly, that example creates the files within DNN project DesktopModules folder.

If you meant create an ASP.NET Web app and add it to the DNN solution, what directories and files do I need to create to make it a DNN module?

Thanks

Naho

The first option is what i meant, while by default the tutorial tells you to create the files in the desktopmodules folder, it doesn't have to be there, you can manually deploy the files in order to test them. Putting them in the websites/desktopmodules/modulename folder allows you to easily test and debug your module within a DNN instance.

Hi Chris

Thank you again for your reply.

I was able to create a module outside the DesktopModules folder. Now, since it's not in that folder, I can't "Import Module Definition". Do I need to zip the module and "Install New Module"?

Thanks

Naho
