As a newbie, I would like to know it I would need to look at "DNN specific" ISPs or just any. NET/SQL host providers.

If my ISP is not "DNN specific", is it possible to led them through DNN installation?

Thanks in advance

Hello eduquint;

First of all welcome to DotNetNuke Forums, i usually use Godaddy and EasyCgi to host my portals.

Godaddy has one of the cheapest hosting plans (huge disk space, large bandwith etc) However Godaddy has no knowledge about how DNN works on their servers :S

I used EasyCGI to host a video portal.

Main difference about these two was Easy CGI has Full Trust support and customer support. Godaddy has only medium trust support.

If you ask me (if you are a newcomer, a new dnn starter) i would go with Godaddy, you can try auto-installs, and ask questions here, dnn community will help you with pleasure.

But if you think professional you can pick up another hosting company (maybe EasyCGI, or PowerDNN)

One final thing: I have a dnn blog that describes everything you need to do with godaddy in order to get a working dnn website on their root.

This also helps you host multiple domains (websites) in a single hosting account.

If you are interested you can subscribe to my blog

Regards.

eduquint,

You should go with a "DNN specific" host, because DNN installation is not the only thing you should do. You need to have an experienced support team behind you. Not just guys like GoDaddy's support "bots" always answering "It is a script issue. We do not solve script issues. Help yourself." anytime you have a problem with your DNN portal.

For shared DNN hosting look at www.dotnetpark.com - about $8.5/month and no problems. PowerDNN shared hosting is decent too, but it starts at $20/month and it is not so flexible as Dotnetpark's one.

In any case, do not go with GoDaddy and 1and1. I did not try EasyCGI, but GoDaddy and 1and1 are just terrible.

Thanks for your help.

I was planning to develop a portal for some clients of mine. The problem is that some of them are large corporations with their own hosting servers.

As I am new to the DNN technology, I was under the impression that I would be able to create a portal, compile it, and upload it to the hosting server and deal with it myself.

Apparently I was underestimating the product requirements. Now, it looks like this approach would not be feasible, after all.

I would need a DNN specific host, and this would be a big limitation. The DNN product appears to be very good and it seems to be the ideal solution to me, but this hurdle seems to be too big.

Another problem I am having is that, to give DNN a try, I installed it in my laptop PC, which already had Visual Studio 2005 installed. After several tries, I could not compile and run the product. I installed the full source code files. It gives me compilation errors. I searched for them in the DNN forums, but was no able to solve them. So, I could not see the product running yet.

I also tried the Starter Kit, but it did not work either. Could you give some hints here, so I could at least see the product running once?

Regards,

Eduardo Quintana

It sounds like your have the idea but some pieces of the puzzle are missing.

First of all, DotNetNuke is an open source, content mangement system based around Microsoft technologies including Internet Information Services (IIS), MS SQL Server, and the Microsoft .net framework. You do not need complete knowledge of each component, but you will have to work with each part at some level. Add the ability to modify the code with Visual Studio and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and you are going to have a large learning curve. There is no short cut to understanding how all of these things work together. You just need to get your feet wet and learn as you go.

I do not know of any product that allows you to compile a portal an simply upload it and everything will work as you dreamed. The technology just doesn't exist yet.

I recommend that you download the Install version and get that up and running first. If you follow the instructions you should be up and running in an hour or so. Not only will this give you a demo of DotNetNuke but it will introduce you to the other components that are necessary to build complex more websites with user security, multiple portals and custom skins.

As far as seeing DotNetNuke running, you used it to post your forum message.

I hope this is of some help to you.
