Hello,

I paid to have a website developed for me. It is up and running and I am generally happy with it. The programmer used DNN. The issues I am having are regarding the cumbersome features of the Blog and Forum section. Actually the biggest issue is with the Forums. They are not as robust and user friendly as they could be. As the owner and administrator of this site I wish to learn more about how to manage the forum section. Will the Dummies book be helpful? I am obviously not a programmer but I have basic tech skills. I do prefer to read stuff in book form or in a form I can print out and carry with me. Any suggestions?

Also, I love the forum section of www.dirtragmag.com and would love to utilize their forum section in combination with my DNN website but was informed that I would have to have users utilze two different logons and passwords. As that would be way too cumbersome I am just interested in streamlining the existing DNN forums. I want basic stuff with the ability for people to post pics and upload links without having to labor through a bunchh of crap.

Suggestions??

Thanks

I would take a look at Active Forums. It's not free but I think it would meet your needs.

Mike,

Is this product that much more superior than what I get with DNN? I went to one of the testamonials on their website and the Forum actually looked kind of similar. Also, is this a one time cost I would be looking at?

Lastly, what about any books on DNN? I believe I have version 4 installed. Will I get anything out of the Dummies book?

Thanks

Will has a number of different ways of purchasing the Active Forum module. You can go with a yearly subscription which gives you access to any releases within that year or you can make a one time purchase and that will give you access to any upgrades he makes to that particular version but if he does a major release (usually about once a year) you have to purchase the module again (at a discounted upgrade price).  You should be able to find more information on his site or by contacting him (or one of his staff). You should also be able to get a trial version from Active Modules so that you can check out the features available. In my opinion, it is much more superior to the DNN forum but I'll be honest in saying that I haven't fully investigated the DNN forum over the last few releases as I've been more than happy with Active Forums.

I can't answer your question about the Dummies book or any of the others available as I've never read any of them. However Cambrian (DNN 5 is supposed to be released sometime in Q1 2008 and from the blogs, etc. and, without having read the books, I don't know how much in the books will be relevant to the new release. If you can I'd set up a "test" install somewhere and use that to learn. If you bork it up it's you don't lose anything starting over and you can post your questions here on the forums for help.

If you are planning on having a good and usable forum in your DNN site, you really have to go with Active Forums... and do it earlier rather than later. You will probably need to get help to do the conversion and you should not simply go ahead and do it without a proper backup and restore procedure in place.

The books are not that great for end users and I don't think they'll help you much.... they certainly won't help with the forum. The best place to find information is this forum here or some of the enthusiast forums like M. Sellers' and Seablick's.  Read back through old forum posts here.. it's not on paper, but it has the best information.

Rob
