Hi,

I am new to DotNetNuke. Relatively new to ASP.NET  and .NET in general. Background is heavy VB6er, MS FrontPage, native HTML user etc.

I have installed V4 of DNN on my web site and trying to learn its depth and breadth. It appears that I need just basic documentation. I have taken the Guided Tour from the DNN site and also perused the Online Help as well. But I don't easily find certain questions.

Questions about

  • What is a container (how does it relate to page/pane etc?)?
  • How do I create my own skins?
  • What is that Bar at the top of my admin page with "Home", "Admin", and "Search" links? And can I configure it - how?
  • Are there other link options beside the Link Module that provide for professional looking menu buttons; e.g. hierarchical, etc? And how do I get them?

Thanks very much for any pointers. Wow - what a great tool already!

a container is a skin for a module, that is placed on a (skinned) page.

with an html editor. please refer to the skinning guide in the documentation pack for a detailed description.

"Home ... Admin (, Host) " is the menu bar, that is rendered by the dnnmenu skin object (SKO), search is rendered by the search SKO, copyright by the copyright SKO, ...

menu is usually not placed as a module, but as a skin object. DNNmenu (aka SolPart) supports vertical and horizontal menu, there is also a treeview menu and css menus (e.g. from http://houseofnuke.com).

In general: one of the advantages of DotnetNuke is skinning flexibility.

Thank you Leupold!

Where is the documentation that teaches all of this from the ground up - concepts to implementing the various features and extensions. Really - just a basic concepts chapter would be great.

Hey Jeff

Where did you find the Guided Tour on the DNN site? I am battling to find it?

Here's the link to the documentation. Under each software version, it's the first item. All your questions are answered extensively there!
