Is there a reason that so many people use the commercial menu systems?  If I have enough html and css knowledge to create navigation using a unordered list or something, can't I just have those link to my different pages?  Or is there some dnn specific things that must be done?

Mike,

The sole reason that people use a "DNN menu" (solpartmenu, house menu, dnn menu, etc...) is that they are dynamic.  If you create a simple menu using HTML exlusively, you will be able to acheive your desired look and feel more quickly to be sure, however, if you add a page to your site, you'll have to come back and update your HTML. This may or may not be desirable depending on your circumstances. If you do use your own menu, you'll also need to have a "dnn menu" somewhere on the site so that you can get to the host/admin menus.....

hope that helps,

Ian

ok, thats what I figured.  About needing the "dnn menu", i've been messing with ways to make the [NAV] menu available only when logged in as host or admin.  I don't want any part of that showing when not logged in or when logged in as a regular user.  I tried to add the [NAV] token to the admin skin and delete it from the portal skin, thinking it would only show when the admin skin was showing, but it doesn't work, the portal skin overwrites it or something, and it never appears.  Any way to do this?

Mike,

It sounds like the solution you were attempting to implement is the right one.  To clarify -- are you adding the [NAV] token to an HTML file, not to an ascx file right? You may need to re-parse your skin to make it work. The basic approach sounds correct though.

Take care,

Ian

That method wasn't working correctly, but i was told to put this in my html file in place of [NAV] and this worked!

<% If DotNetNuke.Security.PortalSecurity.IsInRoles(PortalSettings.AdministratorRoleName) %>[NAV]<% End If %>
