I've been trying to follow the video tutorials for creating custom modules. I've been having some limited success because the video's are geared toward DNN3.x, SQL Server, and using VS2003. I'm working on DNN 4.x, SQLExpress, and VS2005. I've managed to get as far as creating the DAL using most of the steps outlined, but I am running into a problem with ASPNET not being able to log in to the database after I make any changes to the database.mdf file. The changes made where the creation of a new table and stored procedures, using the database explorer in VWD or using the SQLExpress CTP. Everything appears to be fine until I attempt to open the defaul website, when I get the "login failed for user '...\ASPNET'

Does anyone know if there is something buggy about SQLExpress that causes it to reject this login after the database file is opened and/or modified using database explorer or VWD? It's really a pain in the neck to try to replicate this problem and see what else might be causing the problem, so I'm hoping someone else with more expertise/luck might know what is wrong. One thing that I just thought of checking is if the connectionstring I used to connect to the database using CodeSmith might also be the problem, since I didn't use the user instance=true.

Any help appreciated.

I didn't fully understand your reply, but I have been able to successfully install DNN4 on both a WinXP and 2K3Server with IIS5.1/6.0 and create the GuestBook Module. I was trying to point out that I think there is a bug with SQL Server Express which causes a DNN Site to fail due to the ASPNET login failing after opening the database.mdf. Of course I could be wrong, but I'd like to hear from someone else to make sure it's not something simple that I forgot to do or I'm doing wrong.

Yes, I agree, there is a bug.  If I open Visual Studio 2005 Pro, Open connection to the database file, try to open the portal, errors occur.  Your ASPnet user gets locked out of the database.  Similar problems can be created by not running connection.Close() in a macro like this one. So I am wondering if something like that is going on.  But I have noticed you can make changes via macros, just stay out of the Server Explorer window.  You might be able to do work inside this window and just close it before going to your portal?
