hi

i am getting this error while installing dotnetnuke on local computer

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

i am using following setting in web.config file

connectionStrings> Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express --> Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005-->add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(guru);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=dotnetnuke;pwd=dotnetnuke;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />connectionStrings>appSettings> Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules --> Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules-->add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(guru);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=dotnetnuke;pwd=dotnetnuke;" />add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config" />add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" />add key="UseInstallWizard" value="true" />add key="InstallMemberRole" value="true" />add key="ShowMissingKeys" value="false" />add key="EnableWebFarmSupport" value="false" />add key="EnableCachePersistence" value="false" />add key="HostHeader" value="" /> Host Header to remove from URL so "www.mydomain.com/johndoe/Default.aspx" is treated as "www.mydomain.com/Default.aspx" -->add key="RemoveAngleBrackets" value="false" />optionally strip angle brackets on public login and registration screens-->add key="PersistentCookieTimeout" value="0" />use as persistent cookie expiration. Value is in minutes, and only active if a non-zero figure--> set UsePortNumber to true to preserve the port number if you're using a port number other than 80 (the standard)-->add key="InstallationDate" value="3/19/2008" />appSettings>

is Server guru a separate machine or the same machine where DotNetNuke is installed?

If it is the same machine, you should use Server=(localhost).

If guru is a different machine, you need to run SQL Server Surface Area Configuration to enable Named Pipes.

SQL Server 2005 only alows local connections by default.

I hope this is of some help to you.

ajaypathak,

It may be due to the fact that you have your Server name inside (), try this:

<connectionStrings>
     <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=guru;Database=DotNetNuke;uid=dotnetnuke;pwd=dotnetnuke;"

    providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
 </connectionStrings>
 <appSettings>
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=guru;Database=DotNetNuke;uid=dotnetnuke;pwd=dotnetnuke;" />

 Also, make sure you can login directly to the database with those credentials using SQL Server Management Studio.

Take care,

Ian
