hello,

is there an installation guide someplace for baby-stepping newbies thru the installation? id just like to get a local deployment running as easily as possible so i can show a non-profit group, let me them play w/ DNN a bit.

to this end i thought the "Install Package" (VS2005) would be my download, and i configured a site for it in IIS, W2K. however, i get the following when i hit it:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

...sounds like there may be a database portion of the install that im missing.

does DNN use SQL Server Express, or SQL Server?

thanks!

matt

Yes DNN uses either SQL Server (2000/2005) or SQLExpress. If you look in the Downloads section you'll see there's a link for 4.8.2 docs. Inside that .zip is an installation guide. While it's for an older version of DNN 4 it's still useful and I believe it covers the steps for setting up SQLExpress/SQL

thanks, i will check out that. as for SQL Server 2005 vs SQL Express... if i plan to create some custom modules, that write to custom tables, does it make a difference which i use? i have both. thanks, matt

No it doesn't make a difference though I'd probably go with SQL Express on a local development computer install myself.
