Can anyone point me to reference material on changing the CSS controls?  Specifically, I don't want my Fonts to change or images to have a blue outline when I attach a hyperlink to them.  Is this difficult to change?

See the authority:

On images, it's Border="0" in the link, for text, you want the A.Link, etc. entries.

Do you have any experience with CSS and just need a reference for the classes used in DNN?

If so, then just head right on over to lee's site http://www.skinningtoolkit.com/ . It's the most complete reference I've found(other than the default.css in the portal admin section).

If you don't have CSS experience, then I highly recommend you go to Lee's other site www.dnncreative.com , suck it up, and pay the fee to be a member. It's WAY worth it. His video's took me from complete noob to amature in a matter of weeks....I can't tell you how many hours of google it saved me from.
