There's also the obvious method of avoiding email harvesting -- Don't publish email addresses.  Use contact forms.

yes you could use contact forms. However there are times that you want to publish or have online directorys. I do wonder about the coment a couple of posts back. Does the implementation of cloaking in the core work in the text/html modules? I dont belive so because I downloaded a spider and spidered my own site to see what other people could steal. And it worked sort of. if I did a spider on the home page it got nothing(only scaned that one page). However, if I did the spider on any other page it pulled all emails from the entire site. So I do not think that it cloaks them in the text/html module can anyone else conferm this? Also wich modules do use the built in cloaking?

If I am not mistaken you can also use PageBlaster by snapsis. You can add a rule to mask email addresses.

We use a form to drop emails to a mailbox that then distributes the mail to the correct people.  This is working great.  Something we have found for things that don't change is to publish phone numbers and such in a picture.  The bots don't read the pictures.  Our club hotline is part of our header picture.

Another quick trick is to make sure your emails dont use the mailto: format, as most bots scan sites for the mailto: link.

Granted some spiders just grab all hyperlinks, but most spam ones look for mailto: as a way to find emails. I made a special span tag for my emails in the html/text editor which makes it look like a link etc but its really just plain text. Granted clicking on it does nothing but my users are use to it and know its for a security measure.
