First of all I don't know anything about websites and hosting. I still have managed to build 5 websites, thanks to the simplicity of DNN. I was wondering if I can host my own websites if I buy a server? Is that easy? What would I need? Is it a good solution? Please advise me. Thank you.

Your first sentence should give you your answer. The complexity around hosting your own server and serving clients sites is not one to go into with out a lot of technical knowldge and experience. There are many setup, configuration, and especially security issues that have to be taken in order to get up and running and these need to be continually tested to ensure your sites remain up, functional and secure.

That being said, you could however become a hosting reseller provider so all of this is still handled by the company you are using as a reseller, and you can still design your clients sites.

+1 to Justin

To answer the question 'can I host my own websites?' - the answer is 'yes', there is nothing stopping you.

However, the question really is 'should I host my own websites?'.  The answer is a most definite NO.  Go with a hosting provider.  After you feel comfortable with what you are doing, you might flash out and get yourself a dedicated server with that host.  But you cannot possibly provide a secure, high speed, high availability server to serve up a couple of DNN websites at a lower cost than a shared hosting provider.  The server price alone outstrips monthly hosting fees for a couple of years, then there is a windows server licence, sql server licence, data charges, electricity, security patches, UPS setups, backups.   Hosting is definitely a situation where economies of scale apply.

I'll throw in my 2 cents and agree with the other two replies so far.  Hosting your own server is typically not economical nor advisable unless you really know what you are doing.  I have paid hosting at 3Essentials.com and love it, but I also run two of my own servers (one for development purposes, one for live personal websites for myself and some family members).  Do my own servers have 100% uptime?  Hardly.  Even with UPS backups and all, I can't guarantee the power where I live (good snow storm hits and I could be out of power for several hours, for example).  I built both of my servers out of spare parts, my development one is a measly Celeron 2ghz with 1gb RAM, it could hardly be close to "production" quality.  The other server is a bit beefier (actually was a real server that we no longer used at work so I got to bring it home) -- it is a dual processor 2.4ghz Xeon with 1.6gb RAM.

What it comes down to though is for a website that I want to guarantee uptime on, I don't want to bother hosting it myself.  Development sites, personal sites, etc, if they go down for a day it doesn't bother me... I'll get to fixing it when I have time, but if my business site when down I'd not be too happy about that.

If you want to "host your own", you'd be better off getting a dedicated virtual server somewhere because they handle the backups, the power generators, etc, and you still get the benefit of a dedicated machine.  Alternatively, you could purchase a server and co-locate it somewhere so you at least get their power backup benefit, but you have to maintain your own server and if you don't know how to do that, hiring a consultant would be a costly alternative.

I'll also chime in that running your own server is a daunting task, and expensive to do right.  Cost of the data connection alone will run $600-$1,000 a month.  Oh., you thought your DSL/Cable modem would work?  Think again, it's like against terms of service and it's too slow for any significant use anyway.  That cost can buy you a dedicated server, or several, and you in effect are now running your own server, just that somebody else handles the dirty and annoying work.
