But first about me! I am not a professional programmer. I am not a professional web developer. I am a dabbler and I am earnestly trying to learn DNN. I came across DNN a while back and it interested me enough to download it and jump into it. I am trying to learn the DNN module development side. I have good days - I have bad days. I cannot tell you how many times I've changed/coded something and the only way out was a fresh install. It's frustrating but I'm learning bit by bit.
But my biggest frustration and the reason behind this post is overwhelming lack of response from a membership of over five hundred thousand. There are members that respond to posts on a consistent basis. Mr. Washington, Mr. Sellers, Mr. Leupold, Mr. Fabian, as well as others but if you look at the numbers in the forums and do the math, it pathetic. Over 500,000 members and on an average day less that 100 are logged in at any time. As I write this, out of 561,760 members only 32 members are online - 32. Only 0.00005 percent of the membership is currently logged in. Now I realize that one isn't going to log into DNN and stay connected all day but it just seems that at any given moment in time more members should be logged in. I also realize that there are probably thousands of members who logged in, looked around, and have never returned. So the numbers are subject to the stuff numbers are subject to.
The stats for posts themselves are also very poor. The ratio of answers to views for the vast majority of posts is a shame. I would like to see the forum folks add a view that displays the average stats for posts. Things such as number of 0 reply posts, view to reply ratios, percentage of members responding to posts, etc. I believe that the numbers would be surprising.
I know that this post will probably cause some ruffled feathers and angered replies and I apologize if it does but I'm not posting this to attack DNN, or the core team, or anyone else.  I'm posting this because it is frustrating when someone like me, who does not have the expertise or skill level that many of you have, posts a question or error issue and gets minimal to zero response.  Is it safe to assume then that the vast majority of members viewing but not responding to posts possess the same expertise/skill set as I do?
I someday hope that I will be able to post the answer to a problem and be garnished with all manner of kudos but for now my skill set is more of a hindrance than an asset. I will be moving soon and discovered that the new location has a DNN Users Group. I look forward to becoming a member.
Whew! I feel better now!

I don't think I ever had to reinstall a dnn installation on account of a bad module.   Maybe that's because I never fool with the core.  I never compile my stuff into the core.  My module development only references the pre-compiled core framework.

Gman,

A few point to consider while you recover from your venting ...   The vast majority of members are Web site developers that use the modules provided by the core and possibly commerical or free modules too.  The number of member that are code developers are relatively few.  So specific questions about problems with rather deep seated issues inside DNN / ASP.NET often go unanswer or have few that respond.

Keep pounding at it ... it does it easier.  I was in your position several years ago (V2 days) and have slowly begun to get my head around the various structures and object within DNN.   That said,  you will find that question specific to DNN do get answered, especially if asked in a positive nature (not saying your posts were negative)    I would suggest seek ing out a user group where you may find more code developer types (vs. site developers).

32+ uses online on a Friday night  ??!!??... with the hockey playoffs on...  if it wasn't for a server install I wouldn't be here either ... have a good evening

/Paul

I like it when people rant and vent. It's good user feedback.

The 500k member figure is really just part of DNN corp's promotional material, and Shaun's recent blog built some pretty odd claims around it. My advice is to forget about that figure and take the numbers you've quoted as the real world situation. I've run forums and list servers for well over a decade and know very well that less than 1% of members provide 99% of the support... and believe me, short of getting an MVP badge, there's almost no kudos in it.

The learning curve for DNN is very steep and one piece of advice I can give is to read back through the forums like it's a book. There's better information in the backlog of posts than in any book or document. Treat it as bedtime reading.

And welcome to DNN

Rob

Well, my feeling is, the response has really slowed down, ever since the Forums have been shifted from asp.net to dotnetnuke site. We need more invlovement from the verteran Developers
