My viewstate used to be at the bottom of my page and now it is at the top. I am not sure when\how that changed. Could someone point me in the right direction on how to fix that?

this is a change in core code in ~DNN 4.7.0 for optimisation. Viewstate was moved before for improved SEO, but nowadays search engines learned to skip it when reading the page.

The Free PageBlaster for DotNetNuke Performance and SEO will move it back down to the bottom.

Could someone help me (an administrator not developer) understand what the viewstate does, why we need it and if it can be removed how to remove it?
It's adding about 4-5k on my pages and my first thought is that it's slowing thing down.

Sophon Software used to have an app that would remove the viewstate but now they indicate that it can be done withing dnn 4.5 and above.  Can anyone direct me to the docs for this?

Thanks.

Viewstate is used to keep information about the state of your form (input boxes, grids, etc.) so that when you do an update on a page it "remembers" the state that the form was last in before the post.  As in what page you were on in a grid for example.  Or the Address information you filled in before posting, but it had an error that needs to be corrected.

If you are using Http Compression, then manipulating the viewstate to remove it from and add it back to each page request might actually hurt performance instead of helping it.
