I managed to add a reference to the dotneknuke.dll and change the inheritance of my User control to the PortalModuleBase as

The control still does not work Now I am get the following error

I use a module I purchased on Snowcovered.com called Open-SmartModule.  What this does is allows me to build .ascx controls and put them on the portal without having to build a module definition.  It works very well and was fairly inexpensive to work with.
