OK I'm still a newbie to DNN but I have been adding content to my site and before it grows to much I have some questions. (I'm sure they will show how green I am.) All my other websites I have a working copy of them on my computer. If my hosting site ever crashed I can always simply upload my backup and the site is again the same. With DNN it isn't so...FOR ME.

How or what would I need to do to copy my site to my computer?

How could I take the above copied info and turn it into my old site on a new DNN install?

Thanks

Hey FIG,

There are really only two main steps to back up your DotNetNuke site. These are 1) backing up the filesystem and 2) backing up the database.

If your website is located at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\MyDotNetNukeSite you should copy that entire directory and store it somewhere safe. I often compress this into a zip or rar file and label it with the date, and then move somewhere safe...wherever that may be...

To back up your database, you'll either need access to SQL Server Management Studio (or Enterprise Manager) or your hosting company might have a proprietary administrative tool that allows you to perform the same task (if neither of those sound like options -- you'll need to request this backup service from your hosting company). Using any of the above mentioned tools, you'll want to create a complete backup of the database your site is using. Generally, this option is pretty easy to find once you have located your database in the tool. You should be able to find instructions pretty easily in google for the tool that you choose.

take care,

Ian

I don't maintain a working DNN copy locally, but I do maintain a local backup.  I routinely FTP the entire file structure from the host to my system.  That covers all but the database.  For that I use my host's control panel which has a database backup function.  I then FTP that BAK file to my system as well.  My host maintains solid backups as well, and will reinstall my site on request for a fee.  I'm assuming that if their server crashes and kills my site they will waive that fee.  :)

Thanks for the information above. If i copied the DB and all the site folders to a new location the site will not function. As I tried this before posting here (above) to test if what I copied can be made into a new site. Since just coping and pasting doesn't re-create the site, how do you re-create the site? (get it running) Do you need to re-install a dnn and then do something to make it look like the old? Maybe a better question would be how to move a site? I don't want to move just want to know how to reinstall a backup.

Thanks

If the URL is different on the site you are trying to bring up, you need to make sure to modify the portal alias in the PortalAlias table.  We frequently move sites around and this is really the only key to getting them back up if you have copied the entire file system and database.  And, if you have already tried hitting the site before modifying the records in PortalAlias, you will need to recycle IIS to clear the cache or do a Web.config touch to recycle DNN.
