I'm working with DNN 4.8.2 in VS2005 SP1 and I've been doing some work on page size. One of the things I've looked at is what is being put into viewstate. I noticed that the dynamic meta tags in default.aspx are all saving their contents to viewstate, as is the skinDocType asp:literal. I've modified my dev default.aspx to set enableviewstate = false for these items and initial testing suggests everything seems to still behave correctly.

Anybody know if there is a reason why these items save their state?

I know we're not talking about a huge amount of data here - in the region of 300 bytes per page for these items - but lots of little things together make a difference.

Cheers, Rhys

Hi Rhys,

This is a great idea!  I've often wanted to take a look at the DNN viewstate and ensure that everything that can be pruned is removed.  I applaud your efforts!

Since you seem to have come across a valid enhancement, may I suggest you log it as a work item in Gemini, located at http://support.dotnetnuke.com?

I don't recall offhand, but does DotNetNuke reload these values on every request in lieu of using Viewstate?  Depending on how DNN retreives these values, using Viewstate may ultimately be more efficient.  Also, if you haven't already, you might want to ensure that your changes operate correctly in a multiple-portal environment where each portal has specified a different docType or meta tags.  I suspect that they will.
