I have an existing dotnetnuke application with custom desktopmodules. I have installed dotnetnuke.  I open the project by opening vs 2005. File --> Open --> Website and
build it. It builds without errors. In the custom desktopmodule I made some changes to ascx.vb (say for example added new textbox).
I make changes and buid it again and it compiles without errors. But the dll's are not getting created in bin folder and the changes are also not reflected.
How can I open the project in vs 2005 and debug the application. When will the dll's get created?

please be aware that there might be 3 different types of modules installed in your DotNetNuke installation:

  • DNN3 modules, which still run in DNN4, but need DotNetNuke3, Visual Studio 2003 and ASP.Net 1.1 for compilation
  • DNN4 modules in WSP (Web Site Project) format, (requiring VS2005/2008 VSW+) which don't have named .dll files can be opened as you did and run w/o compile
  • DNN4 modules in WAP (Web Application Project) format, for which you need VS2005 SP1 Standard+, to open .sln file to edit and compile

For more details on DNN4 module development, please have a look into the developer guide and Michael Washington's tutorials at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com.

Thank You very much for the information. I'am using DNN3

1. I tried using vs 2003 and when I open the DotNetNuke.sln I get errors that all the vbp.proj in the DesktopModules are missing and skipping all the errors finally
opens the project with a lot of  dll (missing errors) so Iam not able to build or run the project. I looked at all the modules in the desktopmodules folder and did not
    find any vbp.proj.
2. I took a copy of the project that is running from the server and that does not have a DotnetNuke.sln. So I was not sure how to open the project in vs 2003. Since I
cannot give a folder to open the project in vs 2003.
3. Should I have to open any dll or sln that is inside the desktopmodules ?.
4. How can I make the project run using VS 2003.
