When I enter in the keywords in the page settings, they display on the page above the logo.  Is this normal?  Is there anything I can do to hide them?

That is not normal.  It sounds like a problem with the skin.  got a URL to look at?

We're new at developing with DNN.  In fact, this is our first website with DNN, so we more than likely did make a mistake.

Town of High River, Alberta, Canada, Highwood RiverTown of High River, Alberta, Canada, Highwood River, Rocky Mountains, Medicine Tree, Prairies, Agriculture, Western, Rodeos, Economic Development, Tourism</head>

This is what is causing your problems.  Did you enter these keywords into the Site Settings or Page Settings?  or did you try to embed them in the skin or use some other method.

The correct way is to enter the keyword terms into the proper field in the Page Settings (overrides Site Settings keywords) or the Admin -> Site Settings (default keywords for all site pages).

From what I can tell, these keywords are coming from the settings of the page itself.  When you are logged in to the site, you click settings in the upper left corner of the page.  From there you can enter keywords in the basic section.  Under the advanced section, there is another section to enter keywords.  It is the words entered in this section that are showing up.  If I place words in the basic keywords section, I do not have this issue.
