I think there may be a "convert the web.config to asp.net 3.5" swich in DNN5.

Do you have asp.net 3.5 installed on the machine?

The only other thing I would try is this:

Use Visual Studio 2008 to open DotNetNuke:

You may get a message like this:

Click Yes. This will add  the needed changes to the web.config to allow LINQ to SQL to run.
