I use Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and web user control DLL's come in these weird places:

C:\Documents and Settings\JohanStand\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary ASP.NET Files\website3\f1f514e3\dc9a00f7\assembly\dl3\8a06d240\2ee2e4db_a7c1c801

FILE: App_Web_hellodnn2.ascx.cdcab7d2.lxm65j8j.DLL

Indeed I made an HelloDNN2 user control in a web application and I did build page for the ascx.

But these are not genuine DLL's I think because:

* You cannot add them to the toolbox
* You cannot register the DLL's (no design time errors though) on a aspx web page so that they are loaded at runtime. You simply do not see them! And again no errors (at runtime)
* You can create module definitions with them in DotNetNuke (no errors) but then again you do not see the modules in edit, design or view

Are these code behind DLL's and do not incorporate ascx as a genuine custom user control would do?

DNN modules are objects that are designed to be used INSIDE DNN.

There is no reason why you would add then to a toolbox or any reason to register them as DLLs.

DNN itself handles the loading and registration for the want of a better word of all modules at runtime.

What exactly do you mean you do not see the modules in edit design or view.

When you install a MODULE it is added to the portal module definitions for your site - at this stage
its not going to be visible anywhere.

To see one of the modules you then need to add that module to one of the pages on your site.
When logged on as host or admin - the control panel at the top of the page lets you do just that.

Dear Newsgroup Readers,

I am pretty convinced now that the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express DLL's are not genuine DLL's but JIT-compiled, even the with aspnet_compiler.exe build ones are JIT-compiled. However they can be publised on a Microsoft Web Server, somehow these servers can handle them, but not used to create a DNN module package. There used to be a DNN module called SmartDNNmodule that could transform a ascx in to a module but I cannot find it anymore.

Kind regards,

Johan van der Galien.

Dear Newsgroup Readers,

CORRECTION! It does work! While posting to this site I got timed out and logged out from the host session of my local DNN application. And the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express DLL module was also on a public page and then it worked. This must have the same effect as pressing F5 (reloading of the page) which I forgot to do while testing the module.

Kind regards,

Johan van der Galien.
