I am totally new to DNN having worked mainly with Joomla before. I want to install DNN on a MS-IIS/6.0 server using MSSQL.

I have been given the credentials for the db but the host won't lift a finger to help me any further. Reading the documentation it says that there is no web.config file and to rename the release.config file....however there WAS a web.config file, so I preseume I just use that?

Secondly, I just need to know where to put the server name. For example in <appSettings> I assume I need to comment out the  SQL Server 2005 Express string and uncomment the SQL Server 2000/2005  and then add in the credentials:

 <add key="server name" value="Server=(local);Database=database name;uid=username;pwd=1234567;"/>

and also in <connectionStrings>

  <add name="server name" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=database name;uid=username;pwd=1234567;"

Is what I have done above correct?

Thks

don't touch web.config file by hand, simply call your site and you will be presented the installation wizard. Choose "custom" and continue.

When I call my site I get this below. I presume that only the web host can view what the error is and fix it?

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

And, assuming you have the correct parameters for your database, the change you made would be correct.  :)

Wasn't there something about if you open a project in vs and there isn't a web.config, VS creates one for you? To be on the safe side, I'd still rename release.config to web.config and blow away the existing one...
