This error indicattes DNN cannot connect to the MSSQL database. Make sure your new web.config file has proper connection string, also make sure you have copied original machinekey from the old web.config to the new one.

Hi. I deleted all the files on the server, re-installed DNN, created a new database with a new name, but now, it stills says, that it cannot connect to the database!!!!!

Could you please email at devan [at] webdevelopersa.co.za with a sample connection string or full web.config file, just for me to see if I am making any mistakes in the web.config file.

I use, MS SQL 2005, DNN 4.3.4 but if needed will install the latest version of DNN, connection string I am currently using is:

connectionString="Server=sql.mydomainname.co.za;Database=mcb;uid=xxxxx;pwd=xxxxxxx;"

My host gave me no help at all, so I am on my own and the only help that I am getting is form this forum, thanks guys.

Accepted Answer

While this may seem simple, verify that sql.mydomainname.co.za  resolves to the appropriate IP address.  If not use the explicit IP until the correct domain alias can be setup.

Also see if you can access you database via SQL Management Studio -- should be able to access via the IP.    /Paul

PS. see www.connectionstrings.com for examples of valid connection strings

HI, thanks for your help, but no luck, still I cant connect to the database, and it gives me two errors at random it looks like.
I did change the IP address to e.g. 00.00.00 and did not use sql.mydomain.co.za, but still no luck!!!!

1.) Cannot connect to the specified database in the sqldataprovider string

2.)

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
