Did the sub-category mod work out? if so can you share the solution or code?  we're in the same boat right now, and it would be greatly appreciated.

I too would love to see the multiple sub categories enhancements. Is it possible to see a working demo and get access to the code / module?

The beta events module we're getting ready to publish will contain filtered categories (it works with subcalendars and on all views: month, week, and list)...hopefully this will do the trick for everyone.  Stay posted!
