I was only able to attend part of Raul's and Nik's sessions, and also the entire "open forum" session at the end.

It struck me that there didn't seem to be any open source nature to the discussion.  I don't see how it would have been any different had it been a closed-source product like Microsoft Outlook we were discussing.

The DNN team said things like:  "We're working on that"  "We have added this new feature to version 5..." "Yes, that's something on our list for future development."

Not once did I hear anyone say "Would someone like to write that?".  Or even, "we're looking for people to help write this feature...".

The DNN team seems to have tight control over the product, and I think that slows down development.

A non-profit organization like Mozilla is probably a better host for an open source project.

Wow!  What a day people!  I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and learning new things as well.  This was truly an excellent event.  When you consider how short of a timeline there was to put this together, it is even more impressive.  Thank you to everyone who made this happen.  I blogged about this in more detail here:

http://blog.strohlsitedesign.com/Blog/tabid/66/EntryID/149/Default.aspx

I hope to see some new faces at our next Orlando DNN Users Group meeting.  :)

And to the previous poster, "Mike":

While those words or phrases you mentioned were not used, the DNN Core Team always welcomes code contributions.  However, to protect the integrity and success of the project, not everyone's contribution can be included.  If anyone wants to contribute code, simply submit it to Gemini:

I have submitted code in the past.  This is indeed an open source project.  Entire projects have been contributed to the core in the past.

I spent Saturday at SQL Saturday put on by the Orlando Users Group and picked up some great material and met a ton of fine folks, but the presentation put on by ODUG was stunning! Very nice handouts and presentations, not to mention prizes! I can't wait for the speaker's material to be posted so I can start going over it again.
