I have an website which was convered from php with it's own user credentials and some other data. Now I want to integrate everything to DNN. I think may be it's better to integrate the user credentials first. But in my old application, user password is not encrypted and the database structure is different with DNN especially for the user related tables. I really don't know what to do now.

Any Suggestions? Cheers.

Hei ray, i have similar problem.

This is what i did :

  • Create mapping between your old apps and DNN credential structure. There is no way you can convert in different platform easy. :) Create SP or small application as a gate between your old data and DNN structure. This small app is responsible for data migration.

Hi Ray,

Will you continue to be using your old website in conjunction with your new DNN site, or are you just looking to import all of your old users into DNN?  The strategy you adopt will be different between these two extremes.

Hi Brandon, HTH., Thanks very much for the help.

If possible at all, I would want to transfer all the current user to dnn.

Hi Ray,

If I were faced with your requirements, I would just write a quick utility that bulk uploads the users from your legacy database into the ASP.NET membership tables.  It would probably need to be a .NET utility because you'll need to encrypt/hash and salt the existing passwords which could be difficult to do in MSSQL (without perhaps an external .NET call, which kind of defeats the purpose).

I'm not sure how experienced you are with .NET, so if such a utility is beyond your current ability (though it's a great way to get started!), I'm sure there are some .NET utilities out there (google ".net user import" or "asp.net bulk user import"), or DNN modules that will do this for you (this and this look like they might work -- though I have not used either).

Hope this gets you started!

Brandon
