mamlin - You raise a good point, however the test is a little tricky I think.  To be a fair comparison, I'd need a similar site.  I obviously can't just make a copy of my existing site and put it up on a different URL, since Google definitely will detect a content copy and refuse to index the site.  I don't have any new sites to deploy right away, otherwise I'd test on one of those.

The issue with a custom sitemap.aspx is that you can't just edit an xml text file and save it as an aspx file, since .NET will try to handle it.  You'd need to edit the app.  So it'd be easier to just test with XML files if possible.

I guess the ideal thing would be to deploy three 5-7 page test sites, each similar but substantially different content so the Googlebot doesn't think they're the same content, and submit a sitemap.aspx (with default .8 or .5 priorities) for one, sitemap.xml (with same .8 or .5 priorities) for the second, and sitemap.xml (with different priorities) on the third, then track the response time on Googlebot.  If both XML files are quickly handled, then it's the extension, but if only #3 is quickly handled, it's the priorities.

This sounds like a lot of troubleshooting work.  I'll see if I can find some time.

I was thinking more along the lines of adding some new pages to your site (which your existing static XML file won't have), then using/submitting an exact copy of "sitemap.ascx" to Google under a different filename and see if Google indexes those added pages.  If the pages did NOT get indexed it would seem to support the idea that there is an issue with the output of "sitemap.aspx" and how Google currently decides to index pages.

Your scenario of setting up three different sites and sitemap configs would be an even better test (let us know the results if you DO find the time).

Hello guys, do we have a resolution for this issue yet?

I believe the current resolution is to use a third-party sitemap module/tool.  I still intend to create an updated version of the default DNN "sitemap.aspx" to add user-definable page priority settings (defined via tokens in each page's DNN SETTINGS->KEYWORDS area with no need to change any core code).  I'll drum something up and post the solution as soon as I find a little spare time to devote to it.

For anyone coming late to this thread, the "keyword token" approach is described near the end of this posting:

Hello Folks,

I have had similar requests lately from customers using my DNN SiteMap module to generate the Google SiteMap XML. As you now all know, it used to work just fine, but not since google decided to change the implementation.

Anyway, I came up with a way aroung it on the DNN SiteMap, and I am now waiting to see the results after I submitted it to Google. If it gets crawled, I will be posting a patch for the module and let you what algorithm I used to calculate adequate priorities.

Here is an example of the google sitemap generate by DNN SiteMap on my corporate website: http://www.inspectorit.com/Home/SiteMap/tabid/567/IsForGoogleSiteMap/true/Default.aspx

Let me know if you see any issues.
