Maybe this is working as intended...but here goes. When a user requests a password reminder, the e-mail that they get gives them their username and ***'s for their password. Not really useful, is there a setting awry? Not having the passwords encrypted in the DB isn't an option.

Is there a way to allow a user to reset their password with a randomly generated password. I can do it on a Host account, but I don't see a way to enable it for a regular user at login screen.

What version of DNN are you using?  I thought that this only happened when you requested the password for Host Accounts.

Oh, I'll have to try that. My normal account is a Host account. I created a new account to test, and right now it's not sending the password. Odd. However, i'm using 4.8.2.

As far as I know, the asterisks should only be sent in the password retrieval when the password is requested for the host account.  As far as the password being blank for another user, I cannot say that I have ever heard of that happening.  Or did you mean that you haven't received the password retrieval e-mail?  If that is true, there there are a lot of places where that chain of receipt could have broken.

So...it seems to work sporadically. I guess it's better than nothing. At least my usergroup is small enough where there phone calls for lost passwords don't tie up my day.
