Group,
I'm trying to learn best practices for installations/upgrades.  The DotNetNuke that I am running is installed on a host site, I basically chose the option to use DNN and the host site had it up & running.  I tried my luck at installing a module upgrade for the "events" module, followed some instructions to upload the "installation zip file" and I watched the successful upgrade.  It was so simple, I tried my luck at the "announcement module", version 3.04 to 4.00.  This upgrade failed, stated that I needed an upgrade to perform this action.  The DNN that I'm running is version 4.5.3, I see there is an upgrade to 4.8.4 -  I then tried the "upgrade" package of 4.8.4, it also failed, stated that there are "no DNN files".

So my questions are:
1) When installing/upgrading modules, where can I find the prerequisites for the module that I'm trying to install.

2)Everything I've done with DNN is purely test, just learning to build pages.  I'm at version 4.5.3 and would like to get to 4.8.4.
I'm getting comfortable with DNN, I'm thinking I would like to start over, try to get to 4.8.4, have all my modules upgraded to the most current, and then start building my site.  Are there any step by step instructions that would help me get to the 4.8.4??
OR - should I stay at 4.5.3??  Looking for any advice regarding upgrades.

Step one is again to get onto your hosting control panel and figure out how to backup and restore. Whilst it is perfectly fine to hose several DNN installations at the start the sake of learning (I trashed 9 in a row and have been using the 10th for three years since), you'll soon tire of it. Figuring out how to do it will also lead you on the path towards installing and updating your own fresh copy of DNN.

On to your queries. I don't know where those 'update available' links in DNN go as I disable them, but your best bet is to use the Downloads button at the top of this web page here in front of you. The prerequisites for module updates are listed in the "min DNN Version" column on the downloads page next to each module. There are often minimum versions and the Announcements module required 4.6.2. Not all upgrades are worth it and by no means are all the modules worth it. Reading back through module forums is a great way to find out what matters and what doesn't.

There are several upgrade guides around, Sebastian and Mitchell Sellers have them on their sites - check their signatures.

It sounds to me like you might have tried to update DNN in the same manner as updating a module. This will certainly produce the reult you got there. Updating DNN itself is not nearly as straightforward. It's more along the lines of installing from scratch, but instead, it goes on top of the old version. There are plenty of small details however, so check one of the guides and start digging around your hosting panel to see if you have the necessary tools.

Rob,

"It sounds to me like you might have tried to update DNN in the same manner as updating a module" - that is exactly what I did.

Thanks for the helpful notes.  I'll be researching the guides that you suggested!!

And the really good news is that updating DotNetNuke is now quite easy ... provided that you are already at version 4.6.2 or higher.

  1. Backup your website.
  2. Backup your database.
  3. Download the "upgrade" package.
  4. Optional:  Put an app_offline.htm file in your web directory while you do the file upgrades.
  5. Unzip the upgrade package into your web directory.
  6. Optional: Remove or rename app_offline.htm.
  7. Browse to your site to force the upgrade.

Regarding #5, you should have "autoupgrade=false" in your web.config file, so you will have to browse to http://yoursite/Install/install.aspx to force the upgrade ...

If you are nervous about doing any of this, use the backups from steps 1 and 2 to install a copy of your site to a "developmental" server, and test the upgrade process there.  When you are confident that it's ok, do it for real on your production site.
