Hi Everyone,

I've spent the last week going through various problems getting DNN 4.0.2 installed on my home server.

I have finally got to a stage where I now get a repeatable error each time I start from scratch.

I feel I have ironed out all of my errors (except this one) by using the suggested documentation and searching through forum posts.

I would now like to ask for help from anyone who feels they may be able to offer assistance with my problem as I am stumped!

Please forgive me if I have missed the blindingly obvious, I am a new to asp.net and development in general, although I am familiar with basic IIS and SQL functionality as I have administered these services as part of my previous server support function.

My Setup

OS Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

IIS 6.0

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Visual web developer installed. (but not used for installing DNN)

I now get the following error when trying to install the application by browsing to:

 http://localhost/DotNetNuke

Server Error in '/' Application.

Configuration Error

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Source Error:

Line 56: </system.codedom>
Line 57: <system.web>
Line 58: <machineKey

Any ideas?

I appreciate that many of you are busy so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Richard

Richard - can you check to see you are setting your aspnet in iis to be for 2.

if you are running aspnet 1 sites - eg.. 3, you have to configure this in IIS - not sure if this is the true problem but I think it might be -

If not - someone can correct me!

Hi Nina,

And thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I have both the ASP.net ver 1.1.4322 and Asp.net ver 2.050727 frameworks installed.

I have set the properties of the default website to use ASP.net 2.0.50727 in IIS.

I have previously been told that running both framworks on the same server is fine, is that the case or is there potentialy a problem with my .net installation?

Kind regards

Richard

Oh... I was on skype with colleague tonight - you know whining about the dnn world problems and sharing our little headaches and hours spent on getting nothing done!!

You know - I"ve not been able to get DNN4 working on my Win2k server and he says it's because I have't set application pooling - and I don't think that IIS5.1 does that - I'm not sure - because I gave up a while ago after spending so much time and he said he had a hell of a time getting DNN 4.02 to work following the instructions for his Windows 2003 server, until he setup the application pooling..

Have you had a look at that ?  Can you set that up on an IIS 5.1, win2k server?

Again, just a suggestion - since I have just finished talking with him.. and we solved a few more of the worlds problems!!

What version of SQL are you running on server - I think you may have other issues when you get past that one..

I am not sure how, unless you have some sql >> msde connector that you can developer locally in msde/express when it's using mdf files, and then get it to work on an sql connection live..

Do you have sql express on server? Do people do this - sorry for my ignorance, but I honestly don't know the answer to that and there was no way we (me and someone else) could get the site running from a local express instal to an SQL2005 install.  He finally got running but only when he created an SQL install at home, not sqlexpress.
