When my users are logging into the portal

<domainname>\<username>

The last name of the DNN profile properties are being populated with <somainname>...any way of getting this mapping corrected?

After you verify that the last name is indeed filled in the AD profile (I spent a week trying to debug why the email address wasn't getting pulled in on my dev system only to realize that it had been blanked out by someone else when they were testing another program) then you may have to use impersonation in your web.config.
