This is just my experience related to godaddy dnn hosting, from someone who is not really either dnn or asp.net expert – but just someone who learns through experience.
I have more than 120 sites hosted on godaddy – started with them like 4 years ago by chance, after some issues with my previous hosting providers (yes I had a few of them).
More or less all sites are asp.net ones (kind of 40-50 dnn’s, 20-30 other as community server, classifieds, club sites and so on; plus few in php, and just few static html’s) – some sites are mine, but most of them for the clients; and most of them are on shared hosting plans.
Yes, godaddy’s costumer service is pretty bad – I have few problems with them few years, and they were not helpful as they should be (and I have feeling they very often have no idea what they are saying). However, through this, I learned that I cannot count on them, and basically I do all job on my own. So, for all these dnn sites, I have really simple and straight forward solution:
- I install godaddys dnn core, and check everything on clean installation (of course, before that everything is activated what I want to be activated)
- Then I simple tweak everything what I need for each site on my pc in VWD (all layout and css’s, all modules and so on)
- After tweaking everything, than what is for ftp-ing, I ftp to godaddy (but, taking case of all pats), what is for adding through module definitions, well, goes through module definitions; the same is for skins... – and viola – that’s it...
In the last 2 years I dint have any serious problem with any of the installations of dnn at godaddy – I am not sure is that because I learn how to go around the problems, or godaddy service itself is going better – nevertheless, for money what godaddy charges, you cannot expect anyway to much – but I must say, that hosting control panel on godaddy is very impressive (well, for me).
I didn’t host any dnn’s anywhere else – so I cannot compare godaddy with others, but recently I don’t have any problems... and today I am able to put completely active dnn to godaddy in a matter of minutes, and with tweaking css with any number of panes, any type of graphic’s layouts (with gif and jpg to flash and swf) – it can take me a day maximum – and as I have said in the first sentence, I don’t consider myself any expert, because I have learn everything through quite a few number of tries.
