What are MemberRoles? How do they play a part in the DNN framework?

Member Roles (also known as Security roles) allow admins to set which types of users can view, or edit pages and content.  Essential to any CMS.  Everytime you add a role, all the pages and modules on  your site will then include the new role, and you can set whether users in this role can only view, or if they may edit.
