Hello!

I am trying to modify a third party module. It's a module to display any child page links on its page. I like to extend the functionality.  It's a source code version. After I installed the module, the module folder looks like this:

First I thought I just had to change the RandomChildLinks.ascx.vb. But It didn't change anything. I googled around and I realized I need to "re-compile" the module (Yeah, I still not sure what that means.). I looked at the "bin" folder and I believed "Shancer.DNN.Modules.RandomChildLinks.dll" is the one I need to work on.

So I editted the RandomChildLinks.ascx.vb, and recompiled the whole DNN. I copied "Shancer.DNN.Modules.RandomChildLinks.dll" from a recompied folder and pasted it on the same place(bin) on the website.  I opened the site on a broswer and nothing was changed.

I read many online tutorials. I was able to make a couple simple modules but I still cannot modify the existing module. I love to write PHP codes and the PHP code is very simple - you write a code and upload the code to the server - DONE. I am trying to learn this new environtment but it has been hard for me.

Can anybody help me out? Thank you!

Recompiling is basically put all the code into a readable format for the computer to interpret.  Unlike PHP or Classic ASP which was interpreted on the fly by the web server.  Are you making any changes to the ascx file as that may be giving you problems and there may be settings that are preventing you from accomplishing what you want to do within the module.  The reason I ask is because this module is one of mine.

Also what version of DNN is this installed on and are you using what version of Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer.

I see that you have "SuperSimple" installed. Was that one of the modules you were able to build?

The other module is the WAP format. This tutorial might help you:

Did it run on your development box?

Did you set the module cache time to 0?

VB has came a long ways, but also has throw away the baby with the bath water. Microsoft don't realize that not eveyone like to spend half their lives learning new and different way of doing the same thing.

If you are new to this mess, modification is not the best way to go about learning and can hurt you (feelings). Dnn 4.8.3 is more useful as learning installation than 4.8.4 (IMO).

Have fun and good luck.

I was going to email you to ask this question but I decided to ask here first. Thank you for rescuing me here lol. I am developing it under DNN 4.8.4. & VS 2005. (I also could have, VWD 2008 Express, VWD 2005 Express, IIS, SQL server 2005 under Vista if that's easier or neccesary).
I tried to change the code on line 81 (RandomChildLinks.ascx.vb)

newRow("TabName") = "here we go"

I was expecting all the links would say "here we go". But they didn't. I even emptied the randomchildlinks.ascx.vb - it still did display child links. I realized that I was doing something wrong fundmentally.  I hope there is an example how we can edit the existing module, recompile, and overwrite the existing module.

Hello Michael. Thank you for stopping in this newbies post. Your tutorials are awesome. These helped me a lot.  I like the supersimple module. It was super simple lol. I'll read your application development articles again.

I must agree with you on that. I kinda understand how MS is trying to make the development environment easier by making everything GUI based.  I think, once I went through the hardest part(like, now), it'll be very easy. However, it wasn't attractive to me at first. That's why it took me a couple years before I decided to make a module. Only reason I am willing to learn this is that I love DNN so much. Otherwise, I wouldn't even touch it lol Go DNN GO :)

By the time enough number of programmers learned this new environment, MS might say "tada! we developped a new programming environment AGAIN!  Yeah, forget the last one. That's old". That's what I am afraid of lol.
